TAP's first flight to San Francisco is in the air

TAP is the European airline with most growth in North America.
  • TAP quadruples number of North American destinations in only four years
  • Airline arrives in California, on the U.S. West Coast.
  • Number of passengers transported by TAP between Portugal and the United States has grown 176% since 2015.
  • Lisbon and San Francisco connected by five flights per week.
On Monday, TAP began flying between Lisbon and San Francisco, the second of three U.S. destinations to which the airline will begin flying this June.

This new route will strengthen and consolidate the airline's investment in that market, now extending its range to California, on the U.S. West Coast.

The route between Lisbon and San Francisco has five flights a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Flights will depart Lisbon at 10 a.m. and arrive in San Francisco at 2:40 p.m. local time. The return flight will leave San Francisco at 4:10 p.m. and arrive in Lisbon at 11:25 a.m. the next day. Flights are available from €387 (one-way price including taxes).

TAP unveiled flights to Chicago on June 1st with flights between the Portuguese capital and Washington beginning June 16th.

Consequently, TAP has increased its number of North American destinations four-fold compared with 2015, when it only flew to Newark and Miami. This year, the airline is offering 8 destinations in total. Boston, Toronto, New York/JFK and now Chicago, San Francisco and Washington join Newark and Miami.

Additionally, TAP has significantly increased the number of direct weekly flights between Porto and Newark, from two to five, with the worldwide debut today of the new Airbus A321neo Long Range operating a transatlantic route just between Porto and Newark.

"The inauguration of these new routes to the United States makes the implementation and consolidation of the ambitious modernisation, growth, diversification and expansion plans that we have for TAP more and more evident. A much stronger TAP is already a reality," Antonoaldo Neves, the airline’s CEO said.

This solid growth by TAP is supported by a substantial enhancement and modernisation of the airline's fleet, the only one in the world to fly the whole family of aeroplanes from the most modern Airbus generation, Neo.

TAP has ordered 71 new aeroplanes: 21 A330neo, 19 A320neo, 17 A321neo and 14 A321neo Long Range. TAP's fleet has grown 21% since 2015, more than any other European airline, according to Flight Global data.

According to Routes, TAP is the European airline that has grown the fastest in the United States over the last four years, with an average 39% annual increase in passengers transported, versus an average 19% increase posted by its main European competitors.

From 2015 to 2018, TAP increased the total number of passengers transported between Portugal and North America by 176.5%.
