Airline pays tribute to master of portuguese guitar

"Carlos Paredes" gives his name to new TAP aircraft.

TAP pays tribute to Carlos Paredes, the musician who brought the Portuguese guitar to the rest of the world. The new Airbus A320neo, registration CS-TVD, was baptised this Tuesday with the name of the Portuguese composer and guitarist. The naming of the aircraft, which is part of the Airline’s Medium Range fleet, was held in one of the TAP hangars.

This tribute, which celebrates the artist’s personal and professional journey, took place on the 15th anniversary of his death. The ceremony included a special performance by Luísa Amaro, the guitarist’s widow, and was attended by his family, hundreds of TAP employees, the airline’s Chairman and CEO, together with invited guests.

Carlos Paredes’ relationship with TAP goes back a long way. In 1990, as part of the Airline’s 45th anniversary celebrations, the guitarist dedicated the album "Asas sobre o Mundo" to TAP. The record included two compositions written exclusively for TAP: “Asas sobre o Mundo” and “Asas da Saudade”.

During the ceremony, the Airline showed a video in tribute to the guitarist.

The Airline honours the Portuguese composer and musician. The name of Carlos Paredes will cross the globe with TAP starting this Tuesday.

The first flight of “Carlos Paredes” will be Wednesday’s TP1272, which leaves Lisbon at 08:05 bound for Vienna, Austria.

Carlos Paredes, known as the “Master of the Portuguese guitar” - the instrument that he helped popularise throughout the world – made an important contribution to Portuguese culture. The composer and guitarist held recitals in various countries and created musical compositions for the cinema, theatre and ballet.
