As a symbol of their commitment to sustainability, in 2024 TAP and Portugália obtained IEnvA (IATA Environmental Assessment) certification for their environmental management system. The qualification of suppliers and third parties based on ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria by 2025 is a goal that reflects TAP's commitment to developing its activity using ethical, responsible and sustainable business practices. 

The Company aims to subject its suppliers and third parties to a qualification process, ensuring that the supply chain for products and services complies with these criteria, thus contributing to risk mitigation.

To this end, the Company's Purchasing Manual and Supplier Code of Conduct have been revised and the electronic supplier registration and qualification process will be implemented on the SAP Ariba platform during 2025 to ensure that the principles of ethical management and ESG criteria are applied throughout the value chain.

Investing in robust instruments and practices that strengthen the culture of ethics will also enable TAP to ensure regulatory compliance by reducing risk, fostering innovation and contributing to a more responsible and fair business.

The fleet is one of the fundamental pillars of TAP's value chain, and the Company is continually investing in innovative initiatives and technologies to improve operational efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. 

Currently, the Company has a solid aircraft modernization program underway which provides for the phase-out of older and less efficient aircraft, gradually replacing them with aircraft with better energy and environmental performance, having received three Airbus A320neo aircraft in 2024.

In 2024, TAP's fleet consisted of 99 aircraft, 56% of which were the latest generation (Airbus NEO), with an average age of 9 years and 10 months.

Currently, TAP's NEO fleet is one of the youngest in Europe (4 years and 8 months).

Sustainable Aviation Fuels, commonly known as SAF, are an alternative to fossil fuels as they help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% to 80%.

Unlike conventional fuels, SAF is produced without relying on non-renewable natural resources. These fuels use diverse raw materials, such as used cooking oil (UCO), vegetable oils, municipal solid waste, and more. In addition to SAF, there is also e-SAF, a synthetic fuel produced through cutting-edge technologies such as carbon capture and hydrogen electrolysis, utilizing renewable energy sources.

Regarding SAF projects, TAP remains focused on actively contributing to the country's energy transition and is exploring strategic options through projects and/or partnerships that serve as enablers of the decarbonization journey toward a carbon-neutral operation by 2050.

The decarbonization of air transport is an absolute priority to ensure the development of the entire sector and citizens' access to mobility. Currently, aviation is responsible for about 10% of transport sector emissions, around 2% of global emissions¹. However, the aviation sector remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels, contributing to climate change. Recognizing this challenge, it is essential to adopt measures that improve environmental performance and contribute to the decarbonization of the sector.

In this context, TAP's focus is on implementing initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact, with a particular emphasis on the modernization program of the Airbus fleet, the gradual incorporation of sustainable aviation fuels into operations, and the continuous optimization of operational efficiency.

In 2024, TAP's energy and environmental efficiency indicator improved by 9.7% compared to 2019.

Sustainable cabin project

TAP recognizes the need to reduce, reuse and recycle cabin waste from its flight operations in order to reduce its environmental footprint, as well as having one of the youngest fleets in Europe, equipped with state-of-the-art engines and cabins made of lighter materials, with a view to greater operational efficiency and a reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

TAP's priority has been the systematic analysis of consumption and customer profiles, through the observation of quality measurement indicators (NPS - Net Promoter Score), internal reports (cabin reports) and feedback from areas that are close to the customer, as well as monthly Supply Chain audits of caterers, in order to not only meet customer expectations, but also optimize loading plans, which is the main way to avoid food waste and maximize the reuse of reusable items.  

At the same time, a consistent effort has been made to replace disposable items with rotable materials, as well as to promote, wherever possible, the use of recycled and recyclable items in place of disposable items.
